Southwark parking suspension: the £93 you pay whatever happens

A Southwark parking suspension is priced in two halves, and only one of them can ever come back to you. The space charge is £53.15 a day for each car space. The administration fee is £93, and Southwark's own page calls it non-refundable — so the moment you apply, £93 is spent whether the move happens, moves or falls through. Seven days' notice is what the council asks for, which is shorter than Camden's 17 but longer than Bromley's three.
The short version
- £53.15 a day for each car space, plus a £93 non-refundable administration fee.
- Seven days' notice. Emergency works are the only exception Southwark names.
- Removals are explicitly accepted — the page names "reserving space for a removal van or skip delivery".
- Cancel more than five days ahead and the daily charges come back. The admin fee does not.
- Changing the dates costs £90.50, which is almost as much as applying in the first place.

The trap is the admin fee, not the day rate. On a one-day, one-space move the £93 is nearly two-thirds of the bill: £146.15 in total, of which only £53.15 is the bay. Two separate roads means two applications, and two lots of £93.
Seven days, and the notice on the lamp post
Southwark asks for seven days' notice. It then puts a yellow warning notice on the nearest sign five days before the suspension starts, which is what actually clears the bay — drivers move because they saw the notice, not because a fee was paid.
That five-day warning is the reason a late application is worth less than it looks. Apply the day before and, even if Southwark accepts it, the cars parked there have had no warning to move.
Cancelling, and why the date matters more than the move
Southwark's refund rule has one line in it worth reading twice:
- Cancel more than five days before the start: the daily charges are refunded. The administration fee is not.
- Cancel less than five days before: nothing is refunded.
Completion dates in London slip by a day or two all the time. If yours is uncertain, the honest arithmetic is that applying early costs you £93 you cannot get back, and applying late costs you a bay that nobody was warned to vacate.

Southwark streets where this matters most
The borough runs from Bankside and Borough through Bermondsey and Peckham out to Dulwich, and the parking problem changes completely across it. Controlled hours are long and enforcement is close to constant in the north of the borough; further south the bays are residents' bays where a van simply has nowhere legal to stand without a suspension. Red routes are a separate matter again — TfL sells no suspensions on a red route at any price, and parts of the A2 and New Kent Road are exactly that.
Common questions
Is a Southwark suspension worth £146 for one day? Against a parking ticket, usually yes, and against a van that cannot get near the door, always. The comparison people forget is the hourly one: a crew carrying from fifty metres away for a whole day costs more in labour than the bay did.
Can I apply the day before I move? Southwark asks for seven days. Even where a late application is accepted, the yellow warning notice goes up five days ahead, so a last-minute suspension may be legally valid and practically empty of effect.
Do I need one at both ends? If both addresses need one, yes, and that means two applications and two £93 fees. People plan the collection and discover the delivery on the day.
What if the bay is blocked on the day? Ring the council's parking line and start the clock on it being recorded. A suspension is enforceable, so a vehicle in a suspended bay can be ticketed or removed — but somebody has to report it before that happens.
Is the £93 really never refunded? That is what Southwark's page says, and it is why the date you apply on matters. Get the completion date in writing before you spend it.
