Packing & storage

Storage in London, for the gap between moving out and moving in

Most people who need storage in London do not want a storage unit. They want somewhere for their things to be for six weeks, without having to hire a van twice and do the whole move again at the other end.

What it costs

What storage actually costs in London

Two numbers do most of the work: how much space your things take and how many weeks they are there. The rest is about how often you need to get at them, which is the question people answer wrongly most often.

  • How much space it takes

Not the number of items — the volume once it is stacked properly. Wrapped and stacked well, a one-bedroom flat takes up far less than people picture, and the survey is what turns a guess into a figure.

  • How long it is there

Weeks, usually. Tell us the honest range rather than the optimistic one — a chain that slips is normal, and it is cheaper to plan for eight weeks and finish early than to book four and extend.

  • Whether you need to get at it

Things you will not touch until the new place is ready can be packed tight. Things you need to reach have to stay reachable, and that takes more room. Decide before it is loaded, not after.

  • How it is wrapped for the wait

Sitting still for two months is different from a two-mile drive. Upholstery gets covered, mattresses go in bags, and anything that marks gets protected properly.

  • The access where we collect

Storage collections are removals: the floor, the lift and where the van can stop change the collection cost exactly as they would on a normal moving day.

  • Whether redelivery is booked at the same time

Collection, storage and redelivery arranged as one job is cheaper and simpler than three separate ones — and it means the same people who packed the van unpack it.

So what would yours cost?

Ten minutes on a video call and you will have it in writing. No obligation, and no number invented over the phone.

Before the day

The point is that it is one arrangement, not three

The alternative most people end up with is a van they hired themselves, a self-storage unit they drove to on a Saturday, and the whole job done again in reverse two months later with a different set of aching backs.

We collect from your address, store it, and deliver it to the new one when you are ready. You do not need to be there for the middle part, and you do not need to hire anything or carry anything up a ramp yourself.

Tell us both dates when you enquire, even if the second one is a guess. The whole thing is quoted as one job, in writing, and a guessed date can be moved.

On the day

How storage works with a move

Three things that happen on every job, before and after the lifting.

  1. 01

We survey and give you a volume

Video call or in person. You get the space it will take and the weekly cost, so the decision is made against a number rather than a feeling.

  2. 02

    It is collected and listed

Wrapped for standing still, loaded, and recorded so both of us know what went in. That list is what a storage arrangement lives or dies on.

  3. 03

    Redelivered when you say

Into the rooms of the new address, not onto the pavement. Give us as much notice as you can — the week a chain completes is the busiest week there is.

The quote

What the price covers, and what it does not

Both lists go on the written quote, so there is nothing to discover afterwards.

Included

  • A survey and a volume before any figure is given
  • Collection from your address, wrapped and covered for storing rather than for a short drive
  • A written record of what went into storage
  • Redelivery into the rooms of the new address, arranged as part of the same job

Not included

  • Turning up unannounced — access has to be arranged, and it is not a self-storage unit
  • Food, plants, anything living, and anything flammable or pressurised
  • Documents, jewellery, cash and medication — keep these with you
  • Anything gas: a cooker or gas appliance needs a Gas Safe engineer to disconnect

What people said about their move

  • Good experience with Metro City Moves. 4 bedroom house seemed bit difficult to move from London to Liverpool, but they planned well and successfully executed. Thank you.

Before you book

Questions people actually ask

  • How is storage priced?

By the space your things take and the number of weeks. The survey gives you the volume, and the volume gives you a weekly figure you can plan around before you commit to anything.

  • Can I get to my things while they are stored?

Access is arranged rather than walk-in, so tell us at the start if you will need to reach anything. It changes how the load is stacked, and that is a decision made before it goes in rather than after.

  • What insurance applies while it is stored?

Ask us directly and we will tell you exactly what cover applies to your job before you commit. It is not something to leave vague, and it is not something we will describe in general terms on a web page.

  • Is there a minimum period?

Tell us the dates when you enquire and the quote will state the period and what happens if it changes. Chains slip constantly and the quote should already account for that.

  • What cannot go into storage?

Food, plants, anything living, and anything flammable or pressurised. Keep documents, jewellery, cash and medication with you rather than in the load.

  • Can you store just a few things?

Yes. Part loads are common — a few rooms of furniture while building work happens, or one room while a house share changes over. It is priced on volume, so a small amount is a small figure.
