Moving to Battersea is really two jobs wearing one postcode. One is a new-build flat around Nine Elms and the power station, where the building controls almost everything and the goods lift has to be booked. The other is a Victorian conversion off Lavender Hill or Northcote Road, where nothing is booked, the staircase turns twice, and the whole day depends on whether Wandsworth has been asked to hold the kerb. They cost different amounts and they go wrong in different ways.

The short version

Battersea is in Wandsworth. A domestic bay suspension is a £82.20 booking fee plus £43.40 for the first day.
Wandsworth wants five clear working days, and charges more if you give it only seven days rather than ten.
In the new towers, the goods lift booking matters more than the van. Get it in writing from the concierge.
In the conversions, the staircase decides the day. Measure the sofa before you decide anything.
SW11 and SW8 both appear in "Battersea" listings, and they behave differently on the kerb.

What Wandsworth charges to hold the kerb

Wandsworth prices a suspension in parts, and the booking fee is the one that surprises people because it is charged on notice rather than on days:

The page also states a minimum of five clear working days, with weekends and bank holidays excluded — so the five-day floor and the ten-day cheaper fee are two different things, and it is worth reading both before you apply.

Whether a house move counts as "domestic" is not stated on that page. The daily rates above are the domestic ones. Ask when you apply rather than assume, because the non-domestic rates are higher.

How that compares with neighbouring boroughs is in what every borough charges — Lambeth, immediately east of Battersea, charges £98.83 just to administer an application.

The Nine Elms end: the building is in charge

From the power station east towards Vauxhall, most of what is called Battersea is less than fifteen years old. That changes the job completely, and mostly for the better — if you do the paperwork.

The goods lift is bookable and often compulsory. Ask the concierge for the slot in writing, and ask how long it is. A two-hour window shapes the entire plan.
Ask for the lift's internal dimensions, not the door width. A three-seat sofa that fits through the doors and not into the car goes up the stairs, and in a tower that is not a realistic option.
Loading bays are usually underground, with a height limit. A Luton van with a tail lift may not physically fit. Measure it before the date is fixed, because the alternative is carrying from the street.
Many buildings restrict move times to weekday working hours, which rules out the Saturday most people want.
Floor protection is often mandatory. The building will stop the move if it is not down.

None of this is difficult. All of it is the sort of thing that cannot be sorted out on the morning.

The Victorian end: the staircase decides

West and south of the park — Lavender Hill, Battersea Rise, the streets off Northcote Road — the stock is Victorian terraces, most of them split into flats. The pattern is familiar to anyone who has moved in inner London and brutal if you have not:

A half-landing turn that decides whether a sofa comes down the stairs at all.
A narrow front door at the bottom, which is often the real bottleneck rather than the stairs.
No lift, so every item is carried, and the floor number is a multiplier on the whole day.
Controlled parking on most streets, so the van has nowhere legal to stand without a suspension.

If your flat is above the first floor, what actually decides a flat move is worth ten minutes before you book anyone.

Two practical Battersea things

SW11 and SW8 are not the same move. Estate agents use "Battersea" across both. SW8 pulls you towards Nine Elms and Vauxhall; SW11 towards Clapham Junction and the commons. The borough is Wandsworth either way, but the buildings are completely different.

Clapham Junction is a blessing and a problem. It is the reason people move here, and it means the streets around it are busy all day. A van double-parked on Falcon Road at five o'clock is not a plan.

Common questions

Do I definitely need a parking suspension in Battersea? On a controlled street with no off-street access, effectively yes. In a Nine Elms building with a loading bay, often not — the bay is the point. Send us the address and we will tell you which you have.

How far ahead should I book? Ten working days if you want Wandsworth's cheaper booking fee, and earlier again if the building has a lift to reserve. The lift is usually the longest lead time, not the van.

Is a Battersea tower move cheaper than a terrace? Usually, yes — a working goods lift can halve the labour. It is only cheaper if the lift is booked and the van can reach the bay.

Can you move me on a Saturday? We can. Your building may not allow it. Check the rules before you fix the date with anybody.

What is the single most expensive mistake here? Assuming the underground loading bay takes your van. If it does not, everything gets carried from street level, and that is a different day and a different price.
