Islington parking suspension, and the free loading rule for liveried vans

An Islington parking suspension needs 14 days' notice and costs £164.80 for the first day, covering as many spaces as the bay holds. Before you book one, check the concession most movers miss: Islington lets a signwritten removals van load free of charge, for as long as the job takes. This guide covers both routes, the fees, and the deadlines that catch people out.

The short version

Notice: 14 days, or 10 days for a Pay By Phone bay.
First day: £164.80, covering as many spaces as the bay holds.
Day two costs £62.25 a space and day three onwards £67.50 a space a day, with Sundays and bank holidays not charged.
The free route: a signwritten van, loading continuously, on a single yellow line or in a resident bay.
Short notice: £100 on top, at the officer's discretion — and the request may be declined.

The free loading rule — often better than a suspension

Islington's own page says it plainly: you can park outside your home when you are moving, free of charge. The detail decides who qualifies. A liveried vehicle — one that clearly shows the removal company's branding and logo — can park on a single yellow line or in a resident bay for as long as the move takes, provided three things hold at once: the livery, continuous loading, and no separate loading restriction on that stretch of kerb.

An unmarked van follows a different clock: it can park from midnight on moving day and load for as long as you need — until 11am. After 11am it gets 40 minutes at a time.

The 40-minute rule catches self-drive moves

A plain hire van with no branding loses the all-day entitlement at 11am sharp. From then on it is 40 minutes at a time. If your own move will run past late morning, start at dawn — or book a suspension. Same street, same day, different rules.

Two further carve-outs apply. Moving to or from an estate? The standard rules do not operate there — Islington points estate moves to Housing Services for a temporary estate parking permit. And loading must be continuous: for a move with breaks in it, Islington's advice is to buy a permission to park permit and use a bay, not a yellow line.

What an Islington parking suspension costs

A suspension takes the bay out of use and is enforceable against anyone else who parks in it. Islington charges it like this:

Day two onwards is not charged for Sundays or bank holidays.
Each parking space is five metres of kerb.
Suspensions are enforced during the zone's controlled hours unless the application asks for 24-hour enforcement, which requires approval.
As everywhere, enforcement is not automatic: if a car is in the suspended bay, report it to Islington — no borough guarantees a suspended bay will be clear.
Weddings, funerals and community events get free suspensions. House moves do not — Islington's answer for movers is the free loading rule above.

Notice and deadlines

Standard bays: apply at least 14 days before the suspension starts.
Pay By Phone bays: at least 10 days.
Later than that: a £100 administration fee on top, at the reviewing officer's discretion — the request may simply be declined.
Extending: apply and pay at least 4 working days before the current suspension ends.
Once processed, the dates cannot be brought forward.
Islington cannot suspend yellow lines, zebra crossings or keep-clear areas, and is not responsible for red routes or private roads.

Advance warning notices go up on street with 10 days' notice, where possible.

Less than 14 days to go?

Missed the window? There are three remaining routes, in the order worth trying:

The free loading rule. If the van is signwritten and loading will be continuous, you may not need to pay anything at all.
A short-notice suspension. The £100 extra fee is discretionary, so ask — but have a fallback, because the officer can decline.
A permission to park permit, £33.30 a day through RingGo, covering resident bays, business bays and short-stay paid bays. It carries a fuel surcharge: £10.75 a day extra for diesel, £5.65 for petrol, so a diesel removals van pays £44.05. It cannot be refunded.

A permit is not a reservation

Permission to park is Islington's version of what other boroughs call a dispensation. It stops a ticket; it does not hold the space. If the bay must be empty when the van arrives, only a suspension does that. The difference is explained in suspension vs dispensation.

Questions we get about Islington parking

The removals van is signwritten. Do we need a suspension at all?

Often not: a liveried van can load on a single yellow line or in a resident bay for as long as the job takes, while loading is continuous. Book a suspension when the bay must be guaranteed — Islington's own advice is that suspending a bay is the way to be certain of a space close to your door.

We are hiring a plain van and moving ourselves. What are our rules?

Park from midnight and load for as long as you need until 11am; after that the limit is 40 minutes at a time. If the move will run all day, a suspension — or the £44.05 diesel day permit — is the honest budget line.

Can Islington suspend the yellow line outside the flat?

No — yellow lines, zebra crossings and keep-clear areas cannot be suspended. And if the street is a red route, it belongs to TfL rather than the council — see moving house where the council cannot help.
