Enfield parking on moving day: no suspensions for removals — what to do instead

Why an Enfield parking suspension is not the answer for movers

Enfield's page lists the grounds in full: "Parking restrictions can be suspended for the following reasons: Utility works. Funerals. Special events." Removals does not appear. Next door, Haringey and Barnet both name removals as a listed reason; Enfield points movers at the dispensation instead, in its own words — "You may need this temporary dispensation when moving house."

Two process quirks are worth knowing even for the non-removals cases. Applications go by PDF form emailed to parking@enfield.gov.uk, with a plan of the location — Enfield is the only borough of the six still on a form-and-email process. And a "chargeable day" is any day the restrictions would normally apply, the same shape as Haringey and the opposite of Hackney.

The £10 dispensation — cheapest of any authority we track, with a catch

The temporary dispensation is the product Enfield actually offers a house move: £10 per vehicle for one week. Compare that with the nearest equivalents — £30 for a single day in Haringey, £48 a day on a TfL red route — and it is the cheapest kerbside document published by any of the authorities we track, by an enormous margin.

The catches, all from Enfield's own page:

• "You are not guaranteed a parking spot with a temporary dispensation." It waives the restriction for your vehicle; it reserves nothing. The distinction is the subject of suspension vs dispensation.
• Enfield only approves dispensations "that will not disrupt people using the road".
• The application needs the length of time, the vehicle registration and the payment — so the document is tied to one van.
• If approved, you collect it in person from the Parking Shop at Crown Road Vehicle Park, Crown Road, Enfield EN1 1TH (020 3856 0036). For anyone moving into the borough from elsewhere, that collection trip is a real cost in time.

The rules around the kerb: CPZs and School Streets

Enfield publishes a CPZ map rather than a list of hours, and states no borough-wide pattern — so read the sign at the entrance to your zone rather than any "typical Enfield hours" claim. Some zones run seven days: the Electric Quarter zone operates 8am–6.30pm, Monday to Sunday. Near the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, two event-day zones — South Edmonton and Sunnyside — run 12pm–9pm on event days, so a moving date near a fixture is worth checking.

School Streets are the stricter trap. Enfield's are ANPR-enforced, term-time, mostly in short morning and afternoon windows. And Enfield is the strictest of the six: only exempted vehicles may leave or enter during the restriction, so even a van parked inside before the window cannot drive out during it. The resident exemption permit itself caps the vehicle at 2.28 metres in height with no trailer, which rules out every removals vehicle on the face of the terms. If the new address sits inside a School Street zone, the practical plan is to schedule the van's arrival and departure outside the operating windows.
