Bromley parking suspension: the cheapest and fastest of the boroughs we track

A Bromley parking suspension costs £40 a bay per day plus a £30 administration fee, and the council asks for three working days' notice. Both numbers are the lowest of any borough we have checked. For comparison, the same one-day, one-bay booking is £70 in Bromley and £146.15 in Southwark, and Lambeth's administration fee alone is £98.83. Bromley also sells a dispensation at £40 per vehicle per week, which for some moves is the better buy.

Suspension or dispensation — in Bromley the answer is not automatic
In most boroughs the choice is easy, because a dispensation does not reserve anything. It only means you will not be ticketed where you would otherwise have been. A suspension reserves the bay.
Bromley is the borough where the sums can genuinely favour the dispensation, because it is priced by the week rather than the day. If your move is spread over several days — a clearance, a staged move, a job where the van comes back — £40 for the week can beat £40 a day plus £30.
What it will not do is empty the bay. If the street outside is full of resident cars at eight in the morning, a dispensation leaves you exactly where you started. The difference between the two decides which one a move actually needs, and it is worth two minutes before you pay for the wrong one.
Three working days is not three days
Working days exclude weekends and bank holidays. A Saturday move therefore needs the application in by Tuesday at the latest, and a bank holiday weekend pushes it back further. Three working days is generous next to Camden's 17, but it is still a deadline set by somebody else's office hours.
Where in Bromley this bites
Bromley is large, suburban in much of its area, and the parking picture varies more than people expect. Around Bromley town centre, Beckenham and Penge the controlled bays behave like inner London: nowhere legal to stand without a suspension. Further out towards Orpington, Chislehurst and Biggin Hill many streets are unrestricted, and a van can often park outside the door without paying anybody anything.
That is worth checking before you apply, because a suspension on an unrestricted street buys you nothing. If you are not sure which you have, send us the postcode.
One borough oddity: parts of Biggin Hill and Downe carry TN16 postcodes rather than a BR one, despite being in the London Borough of Bromley. They are Bromley for parking purposes, and they are inside our coverage area.
Common questions
Is £70 for a day worth it? On a controlled street, yes. It is the cheapest suspension of any borough we track and it removes the single most expensive thing that can go wrong on moving day.
Can I book it for a Saturday? Yes, but count backwards in working days. Apply by Tuesday for a Saturday, and earlier if a bank holiday falls in between.
Do I need one at both ends? Only where the street is controlled. A Bromley-to-Bromley move can genuinely need one at the collection and nothing at all at the delivery, which is unusual among London boroughs.
Does the £30 admin fee come back if I cancel? Bromley's page does not state a refund position on the administration fee. Ask when you apply rather than assume, and get the answer in writing.
What if my street is unrestricted? Then you probably need nothing. Do not buy a suspension because a removals firm told you to — ask why it is needed first.
