What is different here

Moving in South London is not the same job everywhere else

The things that change the price here, rather than a list that would fit any London postcode.

  1. The Rotherhithe Tunnel is not an option

    TfL restricts it to vehicles under 2 metres wide, under 2 metres high and under 2 tonnes gross weight, with cameras enforcing it and fines up to £160 per journey. No removals van of any size qualifies, so a satnav route through it is a route we cannot take.

  2. Fewer crossings than the map suggests

    A move from SE to SW that looks short can mean Tower Bridge, Blackwall or a long detour, and all of them queue. We plan the crossing and the time of day together, because on an hourly job the traffic is money.

  3. Large houses cut into several flats

    Peckham, Camberwell, Forest Hill, Herne Hill. Big Victorian houses split into three or four, which means a shared hall, a shared stair, and neighbours whose access we should not be blocking all morning.

  4. Genuine hills, and the South Circular

    Crystal Palace, Sydenham, Gipsy Hill, Shooters Hill are steep enough to change how a van is parked. And the South Circular is not a ring road, it is a signed route through ordinary residential streets, which is why it behaves like one.

  5. Bromley asks three working days for a bay

    Bromley wants a suspension application at least 3 working days ahead, and it names removals on its own list of reasons. It does not publish a final price, only the basis it calculates from: £40 per bay per day plus a £30 administration fee per application, confirmed when you apply. A single application can hold up to 10 bays for up to 14 days (Bromley's own page, read 18 August 2026).

  6. Your BR postcode may not be Bromley's kerb

    BR1 Bromley and BR3 Beckenham both cover addresses in Lewisham as well, and BR3 reaches Croydon too. BR7 around Chislehurst crosses into Greenwich, while BR6 around Orpington crosses out of London into Sevenoaks in Kent. Only BR2, BR4 and BR5 sit wholly inside the borough, while Penge runs the other way: an SE20 address that is Bromley's throughout. The council that owns the kerb decides the bay, so send us the full postcode rather than the district (ONS postcode data, checked 18 August 2026).

Which bridge, and at what time

On a South London move the route is part of the quote, not an afterthought. Three miles across the river at half past four can take longer than fifteen miles at nine in the morning, and if you are paying by the hour that difference is yours.

So we work out the crossing before the day: which one, when, and what the fallback is if it is shut. It is also why the Rotherhithe restriction matters — a satnav will happily route a van into a tunnel it is not legally allowed to enter.

If your move crosses the river in either direction, say so in the enquiry. It changes the timing more than almost anything else about the job.

Asked about South London

Do you cover the outer South London boroughs?
Yes — BR, CR, SM, KT and DA are all covered, along with SE and SW. So are TN16 addresses at Biggin Hill and Downe, which are inside the London Borough of Bromley even though the postcode looks like Kent.
Can we park on the yellow lines outside in Bromley?
Bromley grants a dispensation for exactly that, where a job needs continuous access to the building, and removals appears on its own list of examples. It takes one working day and is quoted on a basis of £40 per vehicle per week. Two limitations matter more than the price. A dispensation prevents the penalty but reserves nothing, so a neighbour can still occupy the space. Bromley also cannot grant one on a red route at all, which makes those TfL's to answer. Its page publishes no vehicle size limit either, so confirm the van will be accepted before you rely on one. Read on Bromley's own page, 18 August 2026.
We are moving from South to North London. Is that priced differently?
It is priced on the time it actually takes, and a river crossing in the middle of the day adds time. Telling us both postcodes at the enquiry is what lets us plan the crossing rather than absorb it.
Our house is split into flats with a shared hall. Anything we should do?
Let your neighbours know the date. We protect the communal floors and keep the hall clear as we go, but a shared stair works far better when nobody is surprised by it.
