   Half the borough is a conservation area

   Camden has 40 conservation areas, and together they cover about half the borough. Belsize, Bloomsbury, Camden Town, Kentish Town and Hampstead are among them (Camden's own pages, checked 18 August 2026). Most of that stock is period housing divided into flats, reached by the staircase the building was originally given.    Camden publishes no list of parking hours

   The borough operates 19 zones plus sub-zones, each coded CA- and a letter, and the hours vary from one zone to the next. Camden publishes a map instead of a list, and its own guide calls the assumed 8.30am to 6.30pm pattern a myth. Around the markets, restrictions run until 11pm on weekdays and at weekends. Double yellow lines, footways and kerb crossings are controlled around the clock, so read the plate at the entrance to your street.

   Estate land is not street parking

   Camden states that its controlled zones contain private and housing-estate land where different restrictions apply. Parking on an estate requires a permit, and a Tenant Management Organisation handles the applications where one runs the estate. Some estates are covered by a Traffic Management Order, so a van without permission collects a penalty charge notice. A suspended street bay covers none of that.

   School Streets here use bollards, not only cameras

   Camden restricts the streets outside many schools at drop-off and pick-up times. Its own page says the schemes are enforced with signs and either bollards or number-plate recognition cameras. That distinction decides your morning: a camera street costs a penalty, while a bollard street cannot be entered at all. Removals are not listed as exempt, and Camden asks you to contact it first about any other exemption.

   Three spaces is what the free day covers

   Camden counts an on-street space as normally 5 metres in length. A Luton van is roughly 6.5 to 7 metres long, so the vehicle and enough room to work behind it occupies two spaces, sometimes three. Three is also the limit on the waiver, which is why most domestic moves fit inside it. A fourth space is charged at the daily rate.

   Loading is permitted. Holding the space is the difficulty

   Camden's own wording is worth repeating, because it is regularly misread. The council says there is an exemption when a vehicle is continuously engaged in a property move. It adds that arranging a suspension makes it more likely spaces will be free. The regulations allow you to load; they do not empty the bay outside your door on the morning, and £66.66 is what buys that.

   Some Camden kerbs belong to TfL

   Around Camden Town the A503 meets Kentish Town Road and Camden High Street on TfL's road network. Red route rules apply there instead of the council's, and TfL suspends nothing at any price. Its dispensation costs £48 a day, requires six working days, reserves no space, and no late application exists. Send us the street name and we will establish whose kerb it is.

   Two roads mean two applications

   Camden applies the £66.66 administration charge to every suspension created on its system. A move needing a bay at both ends inside the borough is therefore two bookings and two charges. Crossing into Islington, Haringey or Barnet means two councils, two applications and two sets of conditions. That move then runs on the longer of the two notice periods.

• The free first day has a £200 edge

  Book three days out, legally, at £66.66, and your street receives three days of warning rather than 14. If a car occupies the bay on the morning, removing it costs £200 per vehicle. Camden collects that before dispatching the tow truck and keeps it even if the driver returns first.

• Cancel late and the £66.66 goes with it

  Camden's terms state that the administration charge is not refunded once the advance warning sign has been printed and placed on your street. Cancel before that point and the refund may be partial or complete; cancel afterwards and the sign has already been paid for.

• Enforcement runs 8.15am to 6.45pm, and no later

  Camden's vehicle removal service runs only between those hours, and enforcement of a suspension depends on the resources available that day. A 7am start with a car in your suspended bay therefore has no remedy until quarter past eight.

What does it cost to reserve a parking bay for a move in Camden?

For a house move, £66.66 covers one day of up to three consecutive spaces. That is Camden's administration charge on its own, because the first-day space charge is waived and the short-notice charge does not apply to a move. A fourth space is charged at the daily rate. How much notice does Camden need for a suspension?

Camden asks for 17 days and sets an absolute minimum of three. The five-working-days figure circulating on removals websites is not something Camden publishes, and following it books you eleven days late. Because the short-notice charge is waived for a house move, applying late does not raise the price, but the three-day floor is absolute.

What happens if a car is parked in the bay we paid for?

Ring 020 7974 7134 with your suspension reference and the road name. If the street received 14 days or more of on-street warning, Camden removes the vehicle free on request. With less warning it costs £200 per vehicle, collected before the tow truck leaves and not refunded if the car moves first. Camden's vehicle removal service runs between 8.15am and 6.45pm.

Our flat is a period conversion with a narrow staircase. Is that a problem?

It is the most common Camden move there is, and the borough's protected stock explains why. Forty conservation areas cover about half the borough, and much of that stock is a house divided into flats. The original staircase is usually still in place, and the turn on the half-landing decides what comes out in one piece. Can you move us in the evening or overnight?
