Man and van in Greenwich, where the carry and the hour decide the booking
A man and van in Greenwich is decided by two things a map will never show you. The carrying distance at each end, and the hour at which you begin. The older streets near the river are narrow, and the position immediately outside your door is frequently occupied already. The vehicle stands where it fits, and everything else is carried. That pavement is also the one the visitors are on. Up the hill and eastwards the ground changes completely, and the answer changes with it. We establish both ends at the survey.

What is different here
Man and van in Greenwich is its own job
What changes the plan and the price here, rather than a list that would fit any London postcode.
The vehicle stands where the older streets allow, and the carry is the cost
On a booked period the carrying distance is what you are actually paying for. The lanes behind Greenwich High Road were arranged long before anything the dimensions of a Luton. The position immediately outside your door is frequently occupied already, and we may not be able to reach it. That is not a difficulty by itself. A long carry anticipated is simply a longer booking, while a long carry discovered on the morning is an overrun. The surface underfoot matters equally. Stone setts survive on several of the older streets near the centre, and a loaded trolley negotiates setts at a crawl. The distance is considerably longer in minutes than it appears in paces. So we walk the route at the survey, from your door to the nearest position a vehicle can realistically occupy. The hours are then calculated from that particular walk rather than from a postcode.
The hour is part of the arrangement here, rather than a preference
Greenwich town centre attracts visitors, and it attracts them to a pattern anybody living there can recite. The volume accumulates through the late morning, peaks at weekends and during the school holidays, and rises again in agreeable weather. Those people occupy the pavement your sofa has to cross, and the streets the vehicle departs by. An early start is consequently worth more here than an additional pair of hands. Every individual journey between the door and the van is quicker, and on an hourly booking there are a great many journeys. So give us the day and allow us to propose the hour. The reason will be the town itself rather than our own diary. Short notice is ordinary on a booking like this, and the hour is the element we will argue with you about.
A long carry converts one awkward item into the entire booking
Over a short carry an awkward item is an inconvenience, and over a long one it becomes the entire job. Consider a mattress, a long sofa or a wardrobe that does not separate. Each requires two people with their hands occupied for the complete distance. Neither of them can see past it, or step aside quickly for a pushchair. Boxes forgive a long carry, because they stack onto a trolley and the stack travels once; a single rigid item never does. So we establish what the largest pieces are before we ask about the quantity of boxes. Those travel first, while the vehicle is empty and the pavement is still reasonably quiet. Mention the wardrobe at the booking stage rather than when we encounter it in the hallway.
The borough does not hold a single shape for long
A few streets apart, Greenwich becomes a different proposition. Down beside the river the streets are old and genuinely tight. Eastwards along Trafalgar Road, and upwards towards Shooters Hill, Eltham and Plumstead, the roads widen and the houses generally stand back. A vehicle will usually reach the door. Out by the water east of the town the blocks are newer. The approach there consists of a lift lobby and a sequence of controlled doors. A single short journey can therefore begin on stone setts and conclude inside one of those. Greenwich Park occupies the middle of everything, and we route around it rather than through it. Two addresses on opposite sides are considerably further apart in practice than they appear. None of that is guesswork once we have both addresses, which is the reason the destination is a question at the booking.
Where this applies
The parts of Greenwich this page is about
Named, because a page about an area in general is no use to anyone standing in one. These are the places where what is written above is what we actually find.
- Greenwich High Road
- Greenwich Park
- Trafalgar Road
- Shooters Hill
- Eltham
- Plumstead
- Before you fix a date
- Walk from your door to the nearest position a Luton could realistically occupy, and tell us how long that walk took you. It is the figure the booking is calculated from.
- Describe what the carry crosses: pavement, stone setts, a kerb, a gateway. An identical distance takes longer over setts than it does over a smooth footway.
- Identify the largest and heaviest pieces before you count the boxes, because the running order is arranged around those rather than around the volume.
- Give us the day and allow us to give you the hour. Near the town centre an early departure saves more time than anything else available to you.
- Tell us the destination and the floor. Out at Eltham a vehicle generally reaches the door, and the carry is short. Nearer the river the distance from the kerb to your hallway is the question.
Questions
Man and van in Greenwich, answered
- My street is narrow. Will the van actually reach the door?
- Sometimes, and it is considerably better established in advance than discovered with a vehicle blocking the road. Send us the street name at both ends. We will tell you where we expect to stand, and what the carrying distance is from there. That distance goes into the booking beforehand rather than being discovered on the morning.
- Does the time of day genuinely change the price here?
- In the old town it changes the hours, and the hours are the price. The centre accumulates visitors from the late morning onwards, most heavily at weekends. Every journey between the door and the vehicle slows accordingly. We will normally propose an early start for an address near the centre. Out at Plumstead or Eltham it matters considerably less, and we will tell you so.
- It is one sofa travelling a few streets. Why examine it beforehand?
- Because a few streets in Greenwich can involve setts at one end, a long carry at the other and Greenwich Park in between. A sofa two people carry across a driveway in moments is a different proposition over a crowded pavement. A short video call establishes which of those you actually have, and it prevents the booked period from becoming a guess.
- What decides the cost of a man and van in Greenwich?
- The carrying distance at each end, the surface it crosses, the hour we begin, and the largest item in the room. The map distance between the two addresses comes last. We survey before we quote, the quote comes in writing, and the number you accept is the number you pay.

Good experience with Metro City Moves. 4 bedroom house seemed bit difficult to move from London to Liverpool, but they planned well and successfully executed. Thank you.
