The front door is the footway, so the carry happens in public
There is no front garden to work in and no drive to open a van door beside. On a terrace in Walthamstow, Forest Gate or off Roman Road, the pavement outside the door is the working area, and it belongs to everybody else as well. That changes the method rather than simply the duration. Furniture is wrapped and protected indoors, never out on the kerb, so nothing is left standing on the pavement unattended. One of the crew stays at the doorway and gives way to pedestrians, rather than expecting them to step into the road. The vehicle is positioned so that loading happens behind it and the walking line past the door remains clear.
A knocked-through ground floor removes the turn
In an unaltered terrace the hallway does the work. A long sofa comes through the front door, travels down the hall, and turns into the front room. Knock the ground floor into one space and the hallway wall goes with it. The front door then opens into the room, and the staircase comes down immediately inside it. The pivot has to be made in the doorway itself, from the footway. So the measurement that matters is the front door, the newel post and the clear space behind them. That is what stops a sofa in Bow or Leytonstone, rather than the dimensions of the room it is leaving.
A side-return extension narrows the only route to the garden
A side-return or rear extension puts a kitchen where the alley beside the back addition used to be. The house gains a room and loses a route. The passage round to the garden becomes a single glazed door, and in plenty of houses the original back gate has been built over. Anything in the garden or the yard therefore travels forwards: out of the new kitchen, past an island unit, and the full length of the ground floor. Tell us at the survey what is outside, because it alters the loading order as much as the volume.
The largest furniture predates the alterations
A corner sofa, a wardrobe, a sprung mattress on the top floor. Several of them came in through a hallway that is now one open room, or went upstairs before the loft staircase was installed. The exit therefore has to be worked out again from the beginning, room by room. That is a survey job rather than a doorstep estimate. Beds and flat-pack wardrobes almost always have to be dismantled. Where a piece will not leave the house whole, you hear about it while there is still time to decide what happens to it.
